Ableton Live, FL Studio and Massive: how perpetual music software licenses are sold
A DAW (digital audio workstation) is the program where music gets recorded, arranged and mixed. Unlike subscription services, classic DAWs and plugins are sold as perpetual licenses: one payment, and the software stays yours with no recurring fees. Here are three catalogue offers — Ableton Live, FL Studio and the Massive synth — and the delivery formats their licenses come in: they differ quite a bit.
Ableton Live 12: Suite or Standard
Ableton Live is a DAW for electronic music and live performance: its session view lets you launch clips and loops on the fly, right on stage. In the Ableton Live 12 Suite — perpetual license listing the edition is chosen in the options: Live 12 Suite, Live 12 Standard, plus the more affordable Live 11 Suite and Live 11 Standard. Suite is the full package with the complete set of instruments and effects; Standard covers the core functionality without some of the libraries. Native Instruments Massive: the iconic synth
Massive is the Native Instruments synth with wave-scanning oscillators, step sequencers and a 17-effect section — a classic for bass and lead sounds. It is not a DAW but a plugin: you need a compatible host program, such as Ableton or FL Studio. - The version and edition: Live 12 or 11, Suite or Standard; for FL Studio — that Producer Edition is the one you need.
- System compatibility: Windows or macOS per the listing requirements; for Massive — compatibility with your DAW and operating system.
- The delivery flow: for Ableton and FL Studio it is manual and requires action on your side (the Hardware Code, the validation file), and FL Studio delivery also depends on the seller’s working hours.
- The license terms: activation on 1 PC until the OS is reinstalled; for FL Studio, updating the version deactivates the key.
- The warranty and refund terms of the specific offer: for Ableton, refunds are possible only before activation and carry a fee.
