Office 2024, 2021 or 2019: which perpetual key to choose

Published: 4 min read

A perpetual Office key is the choice for people who don’t want a subscription: pay once, activate — and Word and Excel keep working with no renewals. How this format differs from Microsoft 365 is covered in our guide “Office 2021 vs Microsoft 365”. Here we tackle the next question: which perpetual version to pick when the catalog lists 2024, 2021 and 2019.

How the versions differ

Every perpetual Office version is “frozen” at release: no new features arrive afterwards, only security updates — and those for a limited period.

  • Office 2024 is the newest perpetual release with the longest support horizon (until 2029). The LTSC edition (Long-Term Servicing Channel) is the enterprise variant of the same version: the same app set, designed to work without subscription cloud services.
  • Office 2021 is the previous generation; its support ends in October 2026. For everyday document work its feature set is still entirely sufficient.
  • Office 2019 is older still: official Microsoft support has already ended. Such a key only makes sense as a deliberate budget choice for a machine with no critical requirements.

What’s in the suite depends not only on the year but also on the edition: Pro Plus includes the full set (up to Access), while Home & Business covers the core work apps.

The catalog listings and their formats

  • Microsoft Office 2024 Pro Plus LTSC — license key — a key for Windows 10/11 (32/64-bit). It is activated directly inside the Office app; the license binds to the computer and becomes invalid after the system is formatted. The suite does not run on macOS.
  • Microsoft Office 2024 / 2021 / 2019 — key for Windows and macOS — the edition is chosen in the options at checkout (down to Office 2016), a retail license for 1 PC. A key detail from the listing: account-linked variants activate on your Microsoft account and move with you to a new computer, while “no account link” variants stop working after a Windows reinstall or a hardware change.
  • Microsoft Office 2021 Pro Plus — license key — a key for Windows 10/11 on one PC; instructions and a link to the original Microsoft installer image are included.

What to check before paying

  • The version and edition in the chosen option: Pro Plus and Home & Business are different app sets.
  • The platform. Only the matching options suit macOS — and check compatibility with your system version (per the listing, Office 2024 needs macOS 12 or later).
  • The binding format. An account-linked key can move to a new PC; a device-bound key cannot. This is the main practical criterion between otherwise similar offers.
  • Activation method and warranty. The Office 2024 LTSC listing states explicitly: activation happens only inside the Office app. Support and replacement terms are described by the seller.

If what you actually need is OneDrive cloud storage, multi-device use and always-fresh features, look at the subscription formats in our guide “Office 365 on a marketplace: your account, a new account or an invite”.

Bazelio is a storefront: payment and key delivery happen with the seller on the payment platform, and the seller assists with activation. Check the refund rules of the specific offer on the product page, and the general process on the “Refunds & disputes” page. More office and system software lives in the Software section.
