Meta Quest and Oculus: buying VR games, apps and store credit

Meta Quest headsets (formerly Oculus) are standalone VR devices with their own Quest Store. There are two distinct ways to buy content in it, and they’re easy to mix up: an activation key for a specific app, or a gift card that tops up your balance so you can pay for anything. Below we break down both formats, plus apps for PCVR and video playback, and how a Quest VR key differs from a Steam gift.

Key vs gift card — the difference

• An activation key (Quest Store) ties one specific app to your account. That’s how, for example, Beat Saber for Meta Quest, VR players and Virtual Desktop are sold. The code is delivered after payment; you activate it per the seller’s instructions.
• A Meta Quest gift card tops up your Meta account balance, and you spend that credit on any games and add-ons in the store yourself. Handy when the app you want isn’t sold as a separate key.

Meta Quest gift cards

Per the listings these are US region codes — used to buy content in the US Meta store. They differ by denomination and delivery:

• Meta Quest — US card 15–100 dollars: code of your chosen value, delivered automatically after payment.
• Meta Quest gift card — balance top-up: denominations from 15 to 90 dollars, tops up the balance without linking a bank card.
• Meta Quest — card for any game: you name the game and its dollar price, from 5 dollars, and get the code in chat.

The card region is a neutral store condition: a US card works with an account whose Meta store is also set to the US. Check your account region on the product page or with the seller in chat.

VR apps: streaming and video

• Virtual Desktop mirrors your computer screen into the headset and wirelessly streams PC and VR games over your local network — the go-to tool for PCVR. The format is a license key with activation.
• 4XVR Video Player Premium and SKYBOX VR Video Player are video players for Quest: 2D, 3D and panoramic 180°/360° video on a big-screen or fully immersive view. Both are sold as Quest Store activation keys.

A Quest key is not a Steam gift

The same game can be sold for different devices. Beat Saber exists both as a Meta Quest key (standalone headset) and as a Steam gift — that’s SteamVR, a game for a Steam account that a bot sends as a friend gift (per the listing, only for accounts with a Russia store region). What to check before paying

• Platform. Quest Store keys activate only on a Meta Quest headset; PCVR via Steam needs a Steam account and a compatible headset.
• Account region. Gift cards are tied to the Meta store region (US per the listings). Confirm it before paying.
• What exactly you’re buying. A key = one app; a card = balance for any purchase.
