CrossOver: Windows apps on macOS and Linux — how the license works

Published: 3 min read

CrossOver is a program by CodeWeavers that runs Windows applications on macOS and Linux without installing Windows and without virtual machines. It is a commercial layer on top of Wine: the Windows program runs right inside your system rather than inside a separate operating system. Hence the main practical differences from a VM — no Windows license needed, no disk space or memory to set aside for it, no dual boot. Here are the license options on sale and how activation works.

License options

In the CrossOver for macOS and Linux — activation key listing, the variant is picked in the options, all for the current version 25/26:

  • macOS, 1 year — the license is valid for 12 months;
  • macOS, perpetual key — no time limit, with updates and support for 12 months;
  • Linux, perpetual key — the same terms, but for Linux.

The difference between “1 year” and “perpetual” is what happens after the first 12 months. The annual license expires entirely. The perpetual key keeps working, but new versions and CodeWeavers support are no longer included after 12 months — you stay on whichever version you managed to update to.

How the purchase and activation work

The format is an activation key: after payment you receive a code, install CrossOver from the official CodeWeavers website and activate the code inside the program. From there, Windows applications are installed and launched through CrossOver — no dual boot and no virtual machines. The delivery terms of a specific order are described on the seller’s page; the key and order support are provided by a third-party seller.

Honest limitations

CrossOver does not guarantee that every Windows program will run flawlessly: compatibility depends on the specific application. Before buying, look up the programs you need in the CodeWeavers compatibility database — it shows how well an application runs and what its known issues are. If a program critical to you is missing from the database or flagged as problematic, it is more honest to consider other ways of running it than to count on luck.

Keep demanding workloads in mind too: the more complex the application, the higher the chance of quirks. For office software, utilities and many games CrossOver is a workable option, but checking the database before paying spares you the disappointment.

What to check before paying

  • The platform and license variant: macOS for 1 year, macOS perpetual or Linux perpetual — the choice is made in the listing’s options.
  • Compatibility of the applications you need in the CodeWeavers database — before paying, not after.
  • The update window: with the perpetual key, updates and support are limited to 12 months — make sure that works for you.
  • The delivery and refund terms on the seller’s page and buyer reviews on the listing.

Bazelio is a storefront: payment is taken by the seller on the payment platform, and the seller handles key delivery and support. How buying a license on a marketplace differs from buying directly from the developer is covered in the “Subscribing directly or via a marketplace” guide, and other perpetual licenses are collected in the Software category.
