How to top up your Steam Wallet: redeem code vs. top-up by login

Published: 2 min read

The Steam Wallet is the platform’s internal balance you use to pay for games, DLC and in-game purchases. Topping it up in advance is convenient — especially ahead of seasonal sales, when it’s easier to grab what you want right away instead of reaching for a card. The storefront offers two top-up formats, and the right one depends on your account’s region.

Redeem code vs. top-up by login

These are two different ways to add funds to your balance:

  • Redeem code — you get a code that you activate yourself in the wallet section on the Steam website. That’s how the Steam Wallet code in EUR for the European Union region works: choose a 5, 10, 20 or 30 EUR denomination, the code is delivered automatically right after payment and is redeemed once.
  • Top-up by login — the seller credits funds directly to your balance using your Steam login; no password is shared. That’s how the Steam Wallet top-up in rubles for the Russia region works: you provide your login and the amount is credited automatically.

How the account region matters

The top-up currency must match your Steam account’s region: a EUR code suits a European Union account, a ruble top-up suits a Russia account. This is Steam’s own rule, not a quirk of a particular listing — Steam won’t accept a top-up in the “wrong” currency. So before buying, check which region your profile is registered in.

How funds are credited

  1. For a code: open Steam → “Add funds to your Steam Wallet” → “redeem a code” and enter the code you received. Activation instructions come with the product.
  2. For a top-up by login: give the seller your Steam login when placing the order — no password or Steam Guard required.

Once credited, the balance is immediately available for purchases in the Steam store.

What to check before paying

  • Account region — it must match the top-up currency (euros or rubles).
  • Denomination: the EUR code is chosen from 5, 10, 20 or 30 EUR; the ruble top-up is set by amount.
  • Delivery format: a code you redeem yourself, or a credit by login.
  • Buyer reviews on the card — real-world delivery speed.

Bazelio is a storefront: payment is taken by the seller on the payment platform, and the seller handles delivery and support. For refund questions, see Refunds and disputes. Other top-ups and currencies live in the Game currency category, and PC gaming products in the PC games category.
